Smollett, who is gay, testified in court Monday that the CNN anchor sent him a text message warning the 39-year-old actor that detectives didn’t believe his tale of being been beaten in the middle of the night by two white men wearing MAGA hats during a homophobic attack in 2019.
Lemon, 55, didn’t mention the revelation on his show Monday night and remained mum about the explosive claim during another segment about the trial on Tuesday.
Lemon, who is also gay, did not respond to a DailyMail.com request for comment.
Republican activist Jack Posobiec accused Lemon of ‘obstructing justice’ after pulling up a 2019 tweet where the anchor said he had talked to Smollett ‘every day’ following the attack.
‘Today we found out Don Lemon was helping Jussie obstruct justice,’ he tweeted on Tuesday.
Author Nick Adams also slammed CNN for not firing the anchor ‘immediately.’
‘If Don Lemon tipped off Jussie Smollett about police investigating the hate crime hoax, CNN should fire him immediately!’
The calls to dismiss the host of CNN’s 10 pm show, Don Lemon Tonight, come less than a week after CNN fired Chris Cuomo, another primetime host, for advising his brother Governor Andrew Cuomo in his sex pest scandal, crafting statements for him and using his journalistic sources to investigate some of his accusers.
CNN dragged its heels in disciplining Cuomo, despite a swell of public outcry, before eventually firing him on Saturday.
Tim Young, a comedian and columnist for the Washington Times, wrote: ‘After Jussie Smollett’s testimony that Don Lemon tipped him off to the Chicago PD not believing his story…he should be the next to get tanked from CNN…’
Former Department of Defense Intelligence Operative and New York Times Bestselling Author Tony Shaffer also accused Lemon of doing what ‘Chris Cuomo did.’
‘Really, @donlemon? Did you do for @JussieSmollett what @ChrisCuomo did for his sexual assaulting brother @andrewcuomo?’
Lemon told his viewers after the incident occurred that he was in constant communication with Smollett because the story was ‘personal’ to him since the pair were friends.
He claimed the actor was ‘innocent until proven guilty’ and will have ‘squandered the good will of a whole lot of people’ if he was lying.
Smollett’s trial continued today in Chicago, where he is charged with six felony disorderly conduct charges for making a false police report.
He faces up to three years in prison if convicted.
Media Research Center Deputy Editor Nicholas Fondacaro called out the network’s silence over Lemon’s possible involvement.
‘Silence from @CNN as Jussie Smollett testifies that host @DonLemon tipped him off to skepticism of Chicago police.’
Another Twitter user, who is not verified, called out Smollett’s ever-changing story, claiming Lemon helped him.
‘Don Lemon was giving Jessie Smollett a heads up about what was going to come out with the media about him and that’s why his story kept changing. Don Lemon should be fired.’
While another user simply wrote it all caps: ‘@CNN Get rid of Don Lemon defending Jessie(sic) Smollett.’
Lemon is also being sued by a Hamptons bartender who claims he rubbed his own genitals then shoved his fingers in his face in 2018.
The bartender told FOX News on Monday that CNN is a ‘network rife with predators and perverts.’
Smollett is accused of hiring two brothers to beat him up after Empire producers ignored a threatening letter he received.
He insists that he was friends with brothers Abimbola and Olabinjo Osundairo, the men who say he paid them to beat him up.
His defense has suggested he had a sexual relationship with Abimbola, who also goes by Abel, and that the pair masturbated in bathhouses together. Abimbola denied it.
Smollett now believes the Osundairo brothers staged the attack because they wanted to scare him into hiring them as his security guards.
On Tuesday, in a hail Mary attempt to salvage the case, he testified that the pair decided to beat him up because they wanted to hire him for security.
He maintained that he never intentionally lied to police, that everything he said was true, and that he never wanted to involve the authorities because he believes cops to be racist and bigoted.
‘One, I am a black man in America I do not trust police… I am also a well known figure and I’m openly gay … I want to play a boxer, I want to play a superhero… the moment I got beat I become a f****t who got his ass whooped,’ he told the court.
Abel and Ola have testified, along with police officers and detectives, that Smollett lied to boost his profile.
